Money Date: Monthly Budget Review

A guided 20-minute conversation for the end of every month. Seven prompts to surface what worked, what slipped, and what to change.

By The DuetWallet Team · Last updated May 26, 2026

Why this conversation matters

Most couples 'review' their budget by glancing at the bank balance and feeling vaguely good or bad. The monthly review is the chance to actually look (together, with structure) and reset deliberately.

~3 weeks

average time it takes a couple to forget what they actually spent on

$340

average overspend per couple per month vs. their stated budget

The 7 conversation prompts

Set 20 minutes. Make tea. Let's start.

  1. How are we feeling about this month, together?

Before any numbers. Just emotionally, where are the two of us with money this month?

    Things to consider

    • Stressed, fine, surprised, proud
    • Why that feeling specifically
  2. Which envelopes ran how?

Look at Ours. Where did we overspend? Where did we underspend?

    Things to consider

    • Categories that consistently overrun
    • Categories that are systematically too tight
    • One-off blips vs. real patterns
  3. What surprised us?

Any line item either of us didn't expect, or didn't know about until now?

    Things to consider

    • Subscriptions we forgot we had
    • Unplanned shared expenses
  4. How are our savings + goals doing?

Progress on the things we're saving toward. What's the number?

    Things to consider

    • Emergency fund
    • Big-purchase goals
    • Retirement contributions
  5. What's coming up next month we should plan for?

    Birthdays, bills, trips, weddings, taxes.

    Things to consider

    • Recurring annual costs
    • One-off events we know about
    • Likely surprise costs
  6. What are we changing for next month?

Concrete envelope adjustments, automation tweaks, or one small habit change.

    Things to consider

    • Envelope amount adjustments
    • New auto-transfers
    • One behavioral change to try
  7. What did we do well this month?

Name one financial win out loud. Even a small one.

    Things to consider

    • A category we held the line on
    • A new habit that stuck
